Coding in the Kill Zone: Technofeudalism and the Entrepreneurship Gamble

Hello, my young friend, my comrade at the keyboard.

Take a seat across from me, order yourself a coffee. But this time, let it not be one of those coffees from the "networking" meetings, served in cardboard cups and reeking of "disruptive" dreams. Let it be a real coffee; because what we are about to discuss will sour that sugary startup taste in your mouth a little.

Today I am going to tell you about the reflection of that glittering "American Dream" within the IT sector, that is, the "Unicorn Fairy Tale." But I will do so as a union specialist, an observer who watches the gears of the system from the inside.

Perhaps we will not write an epic, but we will prepare a manifesto that will seep into your soul, one that delivers the 20,000-volt electric shock of reality. If you are ready, let's begin.

1. The Golden Ticket Illusion: The Digital Lottery and Statistical Lies

We all grew up with that story: "It started in a garage and changed the world." Jeff Bezos's garage, Zuckerberg's dorm room... These stories are capitalism's greatest psychological weapon, what we call "Survivorship Bias."

You only see the 0.1% who emerged from that garage. Yet nobody talks about the 99.9% graveyard of those who rotted in those garages, who were crushed under credit debts, who wasted their youth in sleepless nights, and who were ultimately left with a "failed startup" label in their hands.

  • The Cold Face of Statistics: Today, the odds of a mobile game "catching on" are one in a thousand. The rate at which a software project reaches sustainable profitability is not even 1%.
  • The Lottery Logic: You think you are an entrepreneur, but in reality the system is inviting you into a colossal Digital Casino. You are putting your own labor, time, health, and social life on the table. The "house" (that is, big capital), on the other hand, always wins. Because even the "failed" labor you lose becomes data that feeds the market's general body of knowledge (General Intellect) and weeds out the errors.

2. Entrepreneurship, or "Voluntary" R&D Labor?

Capitalism dangles a carrot in front of you: "Be your own boss!" Sounds lovely, doesn't it? No boss, no hierarchy, just freedom.

**Here's the truth: **When you become an entrepreneur, you acquire the most ruthless boss in the world: yourself. When you could be working 8 hours at a company and collecting your salary, you start working 16 hours a day for the sake of your "dream." You have no insurance, no weekends, and your retirement dream hinges solely on that project making an "exit" (sale).

In reality, you are doing free R&D labor for the big tech giants. Tens of thousands of young people, with their own resources (by borrowing from their families, by taking out loans), test thousands of ideas. Most of these ideas die. And when one of them shines... that is precisely where the real tragedy begins.

3. The "Kill Zone": The Iron Fist of Monopolies

Let's say you got into that one-in-a-thousand slice. You wrote a great algorithm, you developed an app that users adore. Is it time to get rich now?

No, now you have entered the "Kill Zone." You are now on the radar of the big tech giants (Google, Apple, Meta, Microsoft). You have two options ahead of you:

  1. Buy and Kill (Acqui-hire): They offer you a sum of money you can't refuse (which is actually far below the value of your labor). They absorb you and your team into their ranks and pull the plug on your project. The goal is not for you to succeed, but to eliminate your potential to become a rival. You are now a "senior" employee in one of those giant corporate towers, wearing golden shackles.
  2. Copy and Crush: If you don't sell, they will add the feature you toiled day and night to invent to their own platforms overnight as an "update." If you have 10,000 users, they have 2 billion. While you are being crushed under marketing budgets, your idea becomes a small "feature" within their ecosystem.

This is not a "free market," this is a digital feudalism. While you think you are the lord of the clouds, you are in fact a serf paying rent to the cloud lords.

4. The Return of the 90%: Defeat or Awakening?

At the end of 3 to 5 years spent on startup dreams, you find yourself broke, your hair falling out, your social circle severed, scrolling through a "Looking for opportunities" listing on LinkedIn.

That thing you called the "entrepreneurial spirit" suddenly transforms into a "yes" answer given to the question "Are you a team player?" in a "corporate" interview. 90% of entrepreneurs eventually come full circle and become wage workers again.

But with one difference: They are now more tired, more indebted, and more precarious. Capital squeezed you dry by saying "you'll make it," and then called you back to its own factory (office) as cheap labor.

Here's the truth: The capitalist American dream is built not upon the probability of your success, but upon turning the gears with the colossal energy created by your ambition to try.

5. From a Unionist's Perspective: Individual Heroism or Collective Security?

Look, brother, wanting to bring your idea to life is your most natural right. Being creative, writing code that will change the world, is a tremendous passion. We are not against this. We are against this passion being turned into a "gamble" by capital.

So, what is to be done?

  • Consciousness Against Deskilling: Do not see yourself as merely a coding machine imprisoned in the dream of "one day I'll be rich." You are an IT worker. Be aware of the value you produce.
  • Defend the Commons: Instead of leaving your idea at the mercy of a giant monopoly, become a part of the open source world and the knowledge commons. Don't enclose knowledge; organize knowledge.
  • Build a Network of Solidarity: You cannot fight those giant waves alone. Structures like BilişimSen exist to defend the rights you lost during your "entrepreneurship" period (insurance, job security, protection against mobbing).
  • Be Realistic, Organize the Impossible: Rather than buying an individual lottery ticket, invest in the collective power of your class. Because while your odds of becoming a "unicorn" alone are one in a thousand, our odds of transforming the system when we unite as IT workers are 100%.

Final Word

My young friend, the foosball tables, the free beers, and the "flexible work" lies in those startup offices are the makeup that conceals the exploitation of your labor. The American Dream ends one day, and when you wake up, you will be met with the cold morning of reality.

Come, instead of investing that energy at a gambling table with one-in-a-thousand odds; invest it in defending the dignity of labor, the freedom of code, and the common future of us all. You "can make it," but you can only truly become free when we become us.

The future will belong not to those who get rich alone, but to Homo Commonans, who produces together and shares as a stakeholder!
